(:Summary:Changing One's Name:)

For most transitioners, a significant step is changing one's name legally. In the US, this usually requires filing papers in the appropriate court and going before a judge to have the name change legally accepted. A legal name change is required for changing most identity documents for a person (driver's license, social security, national health card, passport, birth certificate, etc). Most financial institutions also require a legal document for changing names on accounts. The ability to obtain services in one's chosen name also usually requires legal documentation.
